October 9 Commencement Ceremony

Date: Saturday, October 9, 2021

Time: 10:00 a.m.

Location: Hilton Coliseum

 

Arrival Time:

Students may begin arriving at 8:45 a.m. Information regarding location of line up area will be forthcoming.

Guests:

At this time there is no limits on the number of guests graduates can invite. However, this is subject to change if conditions arise that warrant implementing a guest limit. CDC guidelines will be followed in the event this occurs, and this website will be updated. 

Masks:

Per guidance from the Iowa Board of Regents for the regent universities:

All students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus are encouraged to wear face masks in all indoor spaces when around others. Unvaccinated individuals are encouraged to wear a face mask anywhere they are around others, and to practice physical distancing when possible.

Handshaking:

There will be no handshaking at the ceremony, however, you will have the opportunity to walk across the stage, acknowledge the president or provost, and get a photo. 

Academic Attire:

Academic attire is required at the October 9, 2021, Commencement Ceremony.

Bachelors:

  • Graduates are required to wear a bachelor's gown, a black cap, and the appropriate color tassel. Students are encouraged to wear their academic adornments (e.g., cords, medallions, etc.)
  • Graduates who are a member of the United States Armed Forces, are welcome to wear uniforms. Graduates who need to wear specific attire for religious or cultural purposes (e.g., hijab, etc.) are welcome to do so.
  • Your cap should be worn level, not tilted. Your gown should hang freely from the shoulders. Appropriate business clothing should be worn under your gown.
  • Academic attire can be purchased from the University Book Store in the Memorial Union or via their website (http://www.isubookstore.com/MerchList.aspx?ID=8392). 
    • Delivery options included shipping or pick-up in store.
      • If shipping domestically, it can take up to 4 days.
      • For graduates who would like their academic attire shipped to an international address, the University Book Store strongly encourages picking up at the store, instead, as there are currently significant delays when it comes to international shipping.

Masters:

  • Graduates are required to wear a master's gown, a master's hood, a black cap, and a black tassel. Students are encouraged to wear their adornments (cords, medallions, etc.)

Doctoral:

  • Doctoral graduates are required to wear: The official Iowa State University doctorate regalia (i.e., Ph.D. gown, Ph.D. hood, and Ph.D. tam).
  • Academic attire can be rented or purchased from the University Book Store (https://www.isubookstore.com/shop/graduation/phd) by the below deadlines. If you have any questions, please contact Katelyn Engh (kengh@iastate.edu).
    • Deadline to Purchase Doctorate Regalia: Monday, August 2, 2021
    • Deadline to Rent Doctorate Regalia: Friday, September 3, 2021
      • If you order after this date, there will be a fee for an expediated order.
    • For graduates who would like their academic attire shipped to an international address, the University Book Store strongly encourages picking up at the store, instead, as there are currently significant delays when it comes to international shipping.
  • Hoods:
    • The Office of the Registrar will provide each doctoral candidate with a Ph.D. hood to use during the ceremony.
      • If you use one of the Ph.D. hoods provided by the Office of the Registrar during the ceremony, you will need to return the hood to the Office of the Registrar staff on stage immediately after the ceremony. Failure to do so will result in a charge to your U-Bill of $175.00 for the replacement costs of the hood and a hold will be placed on your university record.
      • If you will be bringing your own Ph.D. hood or would like to borrow your hood after the ceremony, please contact Abbie Suntken in the Office of the Registrar via e-mail at asuntken@iastate.edu before 4:30 P.M. on Thursday, October 7, 2021.
  • For Veterinary Medicine graduates who have not already purchased regalia, may do so via https://buildagrad.com/iastatevetmed.

Photography:

Flash Flash Photography has been contracted to take your photograph at the ceremony. Photographers will use flash when taking photos, please reach out to us at graduation@iastate.edu or 515-294-1840, if you have any questions or concerns about the use of flash during your photograph.

Diploma Covers/Tubes:

No diploma covers or tubes will be handed out at the ceremony. If you did not receive a cover or tube, you can email graduation@iastate.edu to have one mailed to you, or pick one up in our office.
